The Art of Peacemaking
"This project has the potential to make visible, in a concrete and powerful way the efforts being undertaken by Canada and other countries around the world, to reduce the illegal proliferation of firearms and to promote a culture of peace.
- Lloyd Axworthy, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs
The Art of Peacemaking documents the conception, creation and exhibition of the Gun Sculpture, an anti-violence statement by Canadian artists Wallis Kendal and Sandra Bromley. The Gun Sculpture is a prison-cell size walk-in structure composed of over six thousand guns, grenades, landmines and weapons of domestic violence.
Construction followed intense training in weapons deactivation and difficulties gaining legal and political approval for the project. With weapons arriving from trouble spots around the world, it took eight months to wire and weld the 14 panel, 5 tonne structure.
Meant to stimulate discussion on violence and the role of guns our world, the Gun Sculpture was supported by such diverse groups as PLO, Israeli Army, Sinn Fein and the Loyalist UDP. It opened at the Edmonton Art Gallery and subsequently showed at the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize in Seoul, Korea, and in New York City for the United Nations conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms.
The negative energy of the hardware successfully transforms statistics into a tangible entity, and the shaft of light entering through its ceiling powerfully represents the hope for peace.
The Art of Peacemaking captures a Canadian vision and commitment to the possibility of peace.
